A Quick Start-up Guide to Building Backlinks for Your Website

Building backlinks to your website should be the backbone of your web promotion strategy. It is considered to be one of, if not the most, important aspect of increasing your websites visibility on the web by improving search engine listing page rank.

Because of this I have outlined some simple suggestions in order to get going with your linking strategy. There are many ways of obtaining backlinks and it is an easy process, however it can be very monotonous and time consuming. Please build your links responsibly and do not spam the following services in order to get more links quickly. The search engines can penalise sites that gain links too quickly as it is deemed that the links are not naturally built.

Firstly do a search on a search engine for site that are similar in content to yours. Go through the tops twenty results and contact as many as you can by email to request exchanging links. Some will oblige, others won’t but this is a good place to start and if you only get four links from twenty it hasn’t taken you long.

If you are a member of a forum, check their signature rules and if they allow HTML signatures add your link to it. This way every time you make a post a link to your site will be generated. Use ‘Anchor text’ too if you can for your keyword of choice.

Similarly to the above, if you post comments on blogs then add a link to you site in the post. Make sure you are allowed to do this first by checking with the blog owner. Many blog comment boxes have a section for adding your site so look out for that.

Web 2.0 or social media sites can be a good way to build links. Go to social bookmarking sites such as Digg, Netvous, Delicious and Furl to add you links to news stories or bookmarking features. Make sure you always add your anchor text where possible and always include valuable and decent content when needed.

Creating a Squidoo ‘len’s is always a good idea. Create a page with information about your site and link to it.

Submit your website into the correct category of website directories. The main one is DMOZ but there are thousands of others and can be a useful link building technique. Again this is very time consuming but services like LinkBuildingElite can do this for you.

If you have more than one website or a blog of your own, then link your new site from them.

Avoid spamming link software. The best way to get links is to do it manually. Much software available for this purpose is considered a spamming technique and again could get you penalised by the search engines. Build your links slowly but steadily and you will see results over time.

There are many methods to build backlinks but those mentioned above are a very good place to start, so get going!

Step #1. First you must write an Article.

The first step is to write an related article about your Product or Service that draws the reader in and gets them to click through to your website once they finish reading it to find out more about you and your Product or Service.

Now, your probably wondering why you have to write an article.

Well, it’s real simple actually because what do you get to put at the end of your article?

Your ‘Resource Box’ with your website information and most important of all… your URL pointing back to your website.

So when someone chooses to publish your article in their newsletter or on their website, blog or article directory, they MUST add your ‘Resource Box’ with your website information and URL.

I know some of you are saying… “I don’t know how to write an article” … well, your not alone.

Here are a few resources I’ve put together for you so you can get the basic idea of How-To structure your articles with ease or get someone else to write them for you.

The first is an article I wrote called… THE 7 Step Formula For Writing POWERFUL Articles In Less Than An Hour.

It will show you How-To structure your articles for easy writing. http://www.internetwondersezine.com/article_11.html

The second resource is Elance.com – http://www.elance.com – which is basically a place where you can go and submit a project by category and freelance writers, etc. will then bid on your project. You pick the winner and you set the budget.

This will get you started in the right direction.

Remember, your article is the Nuts and Bolts of this ‘Back Linking’ strategy, so make sure you put some effort into it to get it as much exposure as possible.

Step #2. Submit your article to Article Directories.

This is the next step and an important one at that because this is where your article or articles are going to get picked up by website owners and/or ezine publishers who are in constant need of fresh, quality information to feed their audiences hunger for information.

There are literally hundreds of Article Directories out there and thousands of ezine publishers looking for quality content on a daily basis. And if they choose your article for publication, they must include your ‘Resource Box’ with your websites information and URL.

It’s all about the numbers. The more Article Directories and websites you submit your articles to, the more potential Backlinks you’ll get to your website.

And since Article Directories have recently adopted RSS(Real Simple Syndication) technology into the mix your articles will even get More mileage without you lifting a finger, creating even more Backlinks to your website.

More on RSS in a minute.

Are you starting to see the Power behind writing your own articles.

I hope so.

Step #3. Create your own RSS Feed for your articles.

This last step is a very Powerful step as well.

What you need to do is set up your own RSS Feed for your articles.

Now, if you don’t know what RSS is here’s the basic definition…

RSS is by definition – an acronym for ‘Real Simple Syndication’ or ‘Rich Site Summary’, and the .XML extension is the format used for distributing your news headlines via the Web, which is known as ‘Syndication.

‘Syndication’ is where the TRUE power of RSS is unleashed, getting your message or information across the web in an INSTANT to websites, subscribers and/or readers who subscribed to your RSS Feed.

The easiest way for you to do this is to set up your own Blog either through…

Wordpress.org – http://www.wordpress.org

Or through…

Blogger.com – http://www.blogger.com

Wordpress is a little more advanced so I recommend if you don’t have alot of experience with Blogs or installing scripts that you go set up a Blogger blog which will only take you less than 5 minutes to do.

I’m just giving you some options, that’s all.

Once you’ve set up your Blog the only thing left for you to do is add you articles.

TIP: Make sure you hyperlink your URL and use Anchor Text with your most targeted keywords. By doing this the Search Engine spiders will rank your website higher under that keyword term you specify in your Anchor Text.

After you’ve added your articles all you have to do now is submit your new RSS Feed to RSS Directories and RSS Search Engines.

Here’s a few resources for you to get started with.

Ping-O-Matic – http://pingomatic.com

RSS Top 55 – http://www.masternewmedia.org/rss/top55

That’s it.

Now I know I dumped alot of information on you within this article so just take it Step-By-Step because once you implement it properly it will benefit you for years to come with Backlinks to your website and FREE targeted traffic via the Search Engines, Website Owners and eZine Publishers.

Backlinks – Lifeblood Of Your Website

Over the years search engine technology has advanced. Once all you needed was a website and some meta tags to get listed. Now as the search engines and the search engine spammers race against each other to stay ahead, technology has advanced significantly.

As well as keywords, meta tags and content, search engines take into consideration the number of links from other sites to your own. These are known in the trade as backlinks.

And as a website owner and Internet Marketer you want your site to have a very high ranking, and so you need as many backlinks as you can get.

The first method is to join a link exchange program. These can allow you to build a huge number of links very rapidly, but the big problem with them is many of the sites tend to be spammy and junk sites desperate to get to the top of the search engines. Some search engines will penalise you for links to these sort of sites, which is something you want to avoid.

You also want to avoid your links being on link farms – if there are too many external links on a single site then you may again get penalised by the search engines. In these link exchanges you will often find these link farms.

You can also search for relevant sites and manually create links to them. Now obviously this is a painstaking approach and will take absolutely forever.

There are some definite advantages to having backlinks and you want as many as possible pointing to your site. Now in order for them to be most effective, you need to know a trick or two.

Usually when you are link exchanging or writing articles you are in control of the text that is displayed with your link. A lot of marketers will just write any old blurb and then list their website.

Yes, you get a back link, but you don’t harness the full power of it. It’s like buying a Ferrari and then driving everywhere at twenty miles per hour.

To truly harness this power and drive your backlinks at full speed you need to use what is called anchor text. This is where you have certain words which are a hyperlink to your website. The words you use are your keywords.

For example, if your keywords were “Dancing Elephants” the usual link would be “Visit Michael Angelo’s site on dancing elephants at dancingelephants dot com.”

In order to really enhance your listing and boost the relevance of your site massively in the search engines, you need to make the “dancing elephants” reference a link to your website too. Your text then contains two links to your website – one being the website address and the other the keywords. Because the keywords and linking directly to your sites the search engines love it because they think your site must be more relevant to those keywords due to the link.

The Missing Link – 4 Crucial Types of Backlinks

Google Webmaster Tools says that in order to gain Page Rank (a way of gaging website authority, PR is gaged from 0-10, 10 being highest) you should have high quality sites linking to yours, which is termed a backlink. A backlink is simply a link to your website from another website.

There are several types of link building strategies and all of them should be utilized to optimize your sites for the search engines which in turn will increase our traffic, so build links everyday

1. Relevant/Reciprocal Link Exchange

Reciprocal links are where you exchange links with sites that are relevant to yours. AS far as Google is concerned relevance equals quality as far as a backlink is concerned.

There are some webmasters who exchange links with any and all sites. But if you have a website about weight loss, how helpful is it for your visitors to see a link to a car auction site? This is a weak link and a useless waste of time and looks lame on your website! Build links for your visitors and not for ranks and your site will be rewarded.

The two most important factors in finding reciprocal link exchange partners are relevance and Page Rank, relevance being first important and page rank second. If you can get both then that’s great. If you’re site is new higher rank pages are hard to get, so don’t worry about it and just look for relevance.

Where you place links on your site is important and can be done in several ways. While many still use a links page, this method is not the best option. These days search engines place less value on links pages and when you think about it, how good is a links page for your site and its visitors?

A better option is to place your links and get the reciprocal site to place links as hyperlinks within the content on your site with relevant anchor keywords. This method looks better, provides a natural flow of links and gets more link juice from the search engines and especially Google.

The key to link building on your sites is to make the link look like a side effect and not the end goal.

2. One Way Links

A one-way link is where you get a link to your site from another site without having to place a link back. Of course, one-way links hold the most juice with search engines.

When your site is new it is unlikely that you will get relevant high PR sites to give you a one-way link, unless of course you provide great content or a link bait (explained below).

Natural One-Way Link Building through Content

One of the best ways to get one way links is the natural link method which can be obtained by posting fresh original content on your sites that is so good it makes other websites want to link to it. Good content, which should all ready be a first priority for your visitors and visitor retention, will facilitate natural one-way links.

Link Bait

Another great way to build one way backlinks is to use a link bait on your site. This is the method of choice to get get higher page rank sites to link to lower page rank sites. Link Bait is basically any content or feature within a website that somehow baits viewers to place links to it from other websites. These link baits could be, information hooks, news hooks, humor hooks, tools hooks like a widget or some helpful tool that other sites can use.

Article Marketing and submitting your sites to Internet Directories are very effective ways to get one-way links.

3. 3-Way Links

3-ways: Site A points to Site B and Site B points to Site C and Site C points back to Site A. The point is to try to make reciprocals look like one-ways, this method really doesn’t have much value and I don’t recommend it.

4. Outbound Links

Outbound links are the websites you link to or site as references within content. Whatever your niche there authority and other helpful sites for your visitors and and those are the sites that you want to link to.

Some webmasters are so afraid of losing traffic or giving up their link juice that you hardly ever see outbound links on their sites, this is a big mistake.

Outbound links are a necessary part of establishing your authority within your niche and a vital part of your Internet Marketing efforts. They are a vital part of any website/blog and their existence or non-existence can determine whether high-authority, high page rank sites would ever link to you, mainly because if you are not consistently seeking out new information and intelligence within your niche and citing those sources they will view your website as stale and out of date.

Take a look at the authority sites within your niche, they all have outbound links and references. It is impossible to provide really useful information without offering other sites that can benefit your visitors.

In conclusion, it is crucial for any Internet Marketing Campaign to build links everyday. This is the main way that Google can establish authority, relevance and importance to your websites and is at the center of the search engine optimization strategy.

Shortcuts to Quality Backlinks for Your Website

Building quality, one way links to your website can be difficult, time consuming and frustrating. It is generally agreed that the best way to build links is to build them gradually over time, relying on natural links to your original, frequently updated content.

There are, however, a few shortcuts to building up links. They are not easy ways to make your site popular, nor are they guaranteed to work for everybody. They are simply some casual tips to help you obtain a few quality inbound links.

Submit Articles to Digg

Google absolutely loves Digg. The site is spidered very frequently and the domain has a lot of authority in terms of link building. Even stories with no diggs will still be spidered, so long as there is a navigational path for the spiders to use to reach it. Google cannot use the number of diggs as any sort of authority when ranking a URL, yet…

For the best long term effects only submit good quality articles to Digg. Or better yet, let your users submit the articles that they think are worthwhile. You will quickly get a reputation as a spammer if you keep posting unpopular content.

Other Social Networking sites

Submitting to social bookmarking and social networking sites can be hot and miss for some people.

Some social bookmarking sites such as Delicious and Twitter use “nofollow” on their links so they cannot influence rankings. Other sites, such as Furl, do not.

Having your links on a few social network profiles may also be useful in building up the number of links. For others it is simply not worth it. While some, such as Facebook, do use “nofollow” on their links, some do not. However, the weight that these links carry is relatively low, despite the authority these domains actually carry.

“Widgetbait”

“Widgetbait” is a term thrown around for an object that is added to a user’s website or blog. This item features a link back to the author’s website. If the object is installed on many thousands of websites, this results in many thousands of backlinks. The classic examples of widgetbait include online quizzes, IQ tests or horoscopes.

While these links are valuable to some, for others the quality of the link and the traffic it brings is just too low. If the text of the link bears no relation to the page in which it is contained, Google becomes suspicious. Additionally, the text that links back to the site must relate to the widget, and, the link must go back to the author’s website, not a third party site.

A classic example of spammy widgetbait would be an IQ test that features a text link to an online dating site. Google would soon hear of this and the sites involved, including the sites distributing the widget and the site being linked to would be penalised.

The Best Kind of WidgetBait: Just Build Something Useful

The best type of widgetbait is to simply create something that people want to use. Classic examples of this are Winamp Skins, modifications for forum software such as Invision Power Board and plugins or themes for Wordpress. Why are these good ideas? They will result in you being listed on the official website of each respective product. These sites are popular and the links they feature carry a lot of influence.

Find high PageRank Sites that allow Backlinks

This excellent tool from Seo Chat allows you to perform a web search and sort the results by PageRank. You can look for websites relevant to your content from which you may be able to get backlinks. Good examples include forums and blogs. Always ensure that these sites do not use “nofollow” on their links.

What About Directories?

Web directories used to be incredibly helpful in building up the number of incoming links to a website. The usefulness of directories is decreasing over time and many people question whether there is any worth in pursuing directory submissions at all. The two notable exceptions to this are the Open Directory Project and Yahoo! Directory. The following list outlines the main problems with using directories. Ultimately, it is up to you to decide if it is a strategy worth pursuing.

Does it Check the Quality and Topic of Submissions?

Any free-for-all web directory that has not been penalised by Google is just one site review away from being so. These are nothing more than spam farms. The directory’s editors should at least check the site to verify the given information and ensure the site is legitimate.

On a similar note, web directories should generally be targeted to a specific audience. Most general web directories that have no specific focus will not be of any use to you.

Can it Still Pass PageRank?

While PageRank is far from being the answer to every SEO question, it is still a useful indication as to how “useful” Google thinks a page is. Bear in mind that the most up to date Page Rank is at least a few months old. Use the following strategy to determine if a site has been penalised in Google:

Search for the website’s title in Google.

Search for a large block of text from the site’s homepage.

Search for the actual domain in Google.

If the site doesn’t rank for one and two, but it does for number three, it has been penalised in Google and probably won’t be able to pass PageRank. If it does not rank for any of these steps, the site has probably not been indexed by Google.

Any directory that has been penalised by Google has done something against Google’s guidelines. Don’t associate your website with any directory like this. Google is seriously cracking down on paid links. Any spammy web directory, particularly those that charge for links, are in the firing line as far as being penalised by Google.

Does a Link on this Directory Actually Mean Anything?

Don’t submit to a directory just for a link. Make sure the link is worth your time. A link is not worth having if:

The specific category pages are not indexed,

There are too many links on a single page – having too many links on a single page with dilute down the ranking influence that is passed, or

The directory has very little traffic to send to your website

If you decide to use a web directory, this article entitled 50 Page Rank 3 Or Higher Free Website Directories is a good resource. Just remember to assess the quality of the directory first.

Areas to Avoid

Two of the main places that people try to spam for backlinks are Yahoo! Answers and Wikipedia. Both of these sites use “nofollow” in their links. There is often misunderstanding and false information given about this, but it is true for both sites. If the situation ever changes or you need to verify it for yourself, simply look at the source code on each website. The new service from Google, Knol, also uses a nofollow meta tag to prevent any links being followed.

Two Common Ways to Get Backlinks to Your Site

When it comes to search engine placement and actually getting into the search engines, one of the most important things that must be done is the building of backlinks to your site.  There are many, many ways to go about doing this and two of the most common are blog commenting and forum posting.

Blog Commenting

This is really nothing more than simply searching out blogs that are relevant to your site and making comments on the posts of the blog.  It’s important that when you’re searching out blogs to comment on, you find those that are either in the exact same niche as your site or in a niche that is somehow related because in the eyes of the search engines this makes the your site even more relevant to what you’re trying to rank well for.

When you’re using this strategy to get backlinks there are a couple of things to take note of.  The first is that blog doesn’t have ‘no follow’ tags in their URL’s.  These tags tell the search engines to not follow the link, effectively making it useless for the purpose of getting links back to your site.  The other thing to make sure to NOT do, is spam.  Spamming will either get your comment not accepted, deleted or could cause the link itself to do you more harm than good.  Not only that, but spamming will also turn your name and your site into something people in your niche will want to shy away from.

Forum Posting

Similar to blog commenting, forum posting is all about finding forums and discussion boards that are relevant to your niche and posting.  The most common way to get links back to your site with this strategy is by placing your links in your signature on the forum, thus, every time you post your signature and your links are shown.

You can also place links in your posts, however, it’s important to make sure that the link you’re putting in a post itself is extremely relevant to the topic you’re replying to otherwise, it’s little more than spam and on most forums you’ll quickly get reported or booted.  In addition to that, spamming a forum with your links in any way is just as similar to spamming blog comments.  More than likely your post will be deleted and your account banned, essentially costing you a probably very useful resource for not only building links but also building relationships with others in your niche.

Again, these are probably two of the most common strategies to use in your attempt to get more links to your website, however, there are still many other ways for you to get backlinks so you shouldn’t rely solely on these two.

Secret Viral Tactic That Will Explode Your Traffic And Your Backlinks!

How much would you pay for a system that would literally explode both your traffic and your backlinks? What if I said you could actually implement the system without spending a penny?

Viral marketing is about getting others to spread your message for you. It works on the same principal as pyramid spelling! For example, you tell two people about your offer, and those two people each tell another two people and so it goes on. You only spoke to two people, but within a very short space of time hundreds of people know about your offer!

We’d all like a marketing system that worked in that way wouldn’t we?

Usually for a piece of content or a product to go viral, one of two things needs to happen:

Your content or product needs to be so unique or funny that people see it and automatically feel the urge to tell their friends or list about it

Or

You need to provide an “incentive” for your visitors to tell others about it!

In the first scenario, where no incentive is required, you can expect the viral process to happen rapidly, in some cases thousands of visitors can be generated in hours.

In the second scenario, the manufactured traffic won’t come as fast, but never the less, it will come, and keep coming for a long time. Even with scenario two, your content needs to be good, and in particular your incentive that promotes the viral behaviour needs to be of real value!

Setting up an affiliate scheme for your product and then offering high commissions to the top players in your niche is one form of viral incentive. Another is to give away rebrandable ebooks and software. Another is to use a tell-a-friend script with the offer of a reward for people who “tell their friends”.

Now for the secret tactic that I promised you in the title, it’s a tactic I use and it works!

What about offering your visitor a free gift in return for a link on a page of their site? Sounds ok, but not that viral?

Well think about it for a moment. You get backlinks, and the backlinks improve your rankings. Improved rankings bring you more traffic. The additional traffic generates more backlinks, which lead to even better rankings and even more traffic!

Now do you see the viral potential? This is a little used viral tactic that can bring big results.

I’ve presented the viral tactic above in it’s simplest form. Even in this form it can be highly effective, but with a simple “tweak” it can bring an avalanche of traffic quickly in addition to the traffic that comes from the improved rankings. All you need is to think big, and think viral.

Is there really an easy backlink builder that’s effective?

The short answer to this question is yes. Before delving into the particulars however lets make sure that the basics are covered.

Why have backlinks and what are they?

Backlinks are hypertext (i.e. blue line) links that point to a particular page on your website from another website. These are seen by Google as a vote from the originating site indicating that the destination it is pointing to has some value. Whatever text the link has also tells Google what that page may be about. So if you have ten links pointing at your page that say some variation of “dog training” then your page may appear in the search listings for dog training. Other factors apply here too so don’t get too wrapped up in this explaination, it’s just cursory.

Google loves to use backlinks as a voting mechanism. The more links that say dog training from various sources the more likely it is to rise in the search results page for that search term. As long as the links are of decent value (not from spammy sites) Google will count them, raising your ranking and therefore increasing your amount of visitors to your site.

How do you build links?

The hard way to do it is to ask. You look for other websites that are somewhat related to your topic (not neccessarily compittion mind you) and attempt to contact the webmaster for the site. You offer the webmaster something useful on your site that they might can use such as great content that thier readers might could use or perhaps an application or program that is available. Alternately you can have an article written to give that somehow relates your website’s topic with the other webmaster’s topic and include links back to your site.

The up side to this is that you can come back with some high quality links which are very beneficial. The down side is that it is a huge amount of work involved. Between contacting webmasters that may ignore you to following up ensuring link placement to making sure that the content is relevant and interesting… it can be a daunding task.

Is there an easier way?

There are two ways that can make the effort easier. First is using a service that does it for you. This would be like you hiring someone else to find and create the links for you. This usually can be quite pricey and you have little control over where your links go.

Second is using a software sevice that automates the task for you. There are many versions of software out there that can provide this task, however none of them are equal. There are at least four traits that you need to look for in order to get your money’s worth.

Multiple IP addresses

Google loves variety. The more spread out across the internet the better.

One way links

Even the resembalcne of reciprical linking may hurt the linking power. Make sure that there are no required links back from your site.

Slow growth

Google loves to penalize for unusual activity. Make sure that the addition of links to your site are a few at a time so that it appears more natural

Customized links

Make sure that you can put your keywords in the links to your site. There is little use of backlinking if you can’t tell Google what your page is about through the link pointing back at you.

- Buy text links (backlinks) directly from sites (in case they don’t accept link
exchanges)

- Buy text links from text link brokers.

- Buy text links from link auction sites.

- Pay fee to be included in big, quality directories (Yahoo, Overture,
LookSmart…)

*Pros in this solution:

- Less time and efforts to get links.

- One-way links (better than reciprocal links)

*Cons in this solution

- Money. We must pay fee every month (or year) for some links.

- Buying text links (many in the same time) from text link brokers isn’t
encouraged by search engines. They can penalize us.

- Some links are volatile (not permanent).

*References for this solution:

- Advertising on sites: iwebtool.com/pagerank_checker (PR5 – $10.00 per month)

- Text link brokers: textlinkbrokers.com (5 Permanent Links PR0 – PR4: $175
/month), textlinkpopularity.com (10 Links from PR 3 Pages: $150 – Pay only once
for permanent links – no recurring charges)

- Link auction sites: linkadage.com

- Big, quality directories: Yahoo! Directory (1 link – $299/year – your site
will be reviewed first)

*Tips:

- When buying links from brokers, be sure that you can preview the pages in
which your link will be included. Besides the PageRank, there are other factors
to take into consideration such as: relevant links in this page, how many links
in that page, whether your link is static, …

*Estimated time: 1 week (some directories need more time to review our request)

3. Conclusion:

It seems that the goal of 50 backlinks with PageRank greater than 2 for new
websites is not an easy one. Improving link popularity is a long, patient but
obligatory process. It’s up to you to decide which solution is better or the
combination of these two ones.
