This is a list of traffic generation tactics for driving web traffic and backlinks to your online niche sites. I fondly coined it Project Traffic for short and it will be presented to you in a series of articles.

Here is first in the series of Project Traffic for you.

Submit articles to the Top Article Directories.This is the grandmaster of traffic generation, the process of which is still very effective, yet very mundane. Fully optimize your resource box with anchor text and link backs.

Provide blog comments on other’s blogs. Give constructive opinions or quality information to generate backlinks to your own sites. Note that some webmasters will deem you as simply trying to get backlinks if you provide unrelated one liners.

Leverage on affordable offline advertising to drive traffic to your online site. Wear your site if you have to, on your Tees. Or print your URL on your car, external of your house, windows of your high rise apartment, as screen savers, give away URL stickers etc.

Submit articles to blog carnivals. Make sure that you submit only the best from your article collection and do not spam them.

Submit your posts to Social networking sites. This is the age of new media, social networking is a free and effective means of communication. You should leverage on this channel especially when your targeted niche are between 15 – 35 years old which forms the largest group of social site users. Do active social bookmarking. Help them help you make more friends and visitors to your sites by creating bookmarking icons on your blog.

Use offline meet ups to create exposure for yourself and your site. Around the globe and around the year, there are never-ending seminars be it internet or your related niche. Attend them and generate exposure. You may even be able to forge online and offline joint ventures via collaborations.

While some are more powerful than others, always bear in mind that every little tactic you deploy will eventually yield you some traffic, albeit not instantaneously. The key is patience.

When it comes to search engine placement and actually getting into the search engines, one of the most important things that must be done is the building of backlinks to your site.  There are many, many ways to go about doing this and two of the most common are blog commenting and forum posting.

Blog Commenting

This is really nothing more than simply searching out blogs that are relevant to your site and making comments on the posts of the blog.  It’s important that when you’re searching out blogs to comment on, you find those that are either in the exact same niche as your site or in a niche that is somehow related because in the eyes of the search engines this makes the your site even more relevant to what you’re trying to rank well for.

When you’re using this strategy to get backlinks there are a couple of things to take note of.  The first is that blog doesn’t have ‘no follow’ tags in their URL’s.  These tags tell the search engines to not follow the link, effectively making it useless for the purpose of getting links back to your site.  The other thing to make sure to NOT do, is spam.  Spamming will either get your comment not accepted, deleted or could cause the link itself to do you more harm than good.  Not only that, but spamming will also turn your name and your site into something people in your niche will want to shy away from.

Forum Posting

Similar to blog commenting, forum posting is all about finding forums and discussion boards that are relevant to your niche and posting.  The most common way to get links back to your site with this strategy is by placing your links in your signature on the forum, thus, every time you post your signature and your links are shown.

You can also place links in your posts, however, it’s important to make sure that the link you’re putting in a post itself is extremely relevant to the topic you’re replying to otherwise, it’s little more than spam and on most forums you’ll quickly get reported or booted.  In addition to that, spamming a forum with your links in any way is just as similar to spamming blog comments.  More than likely your post will be deleted and your account banned, essentially costing you a probably very useful resource for not only building links but also building relationships with others in your niche.

Again, these are probably two of the most common strategies to use in your attempt to get more links to your website, however, there are still many other ways for you to get backlinks so you shouldn’t rely solely on these two.

When it comes to getting good rankings, or even semi-good rankings, in the search engines one of the most underutilized strategies is that of getting backlinks to your site or blog.  The sad thing about that is, getting links to your site is perhaps one of the most important things that you can do to raise your position in the search engines and to benefit from the traffic that will provide.

It’s long been known that getting these backlinks, particularly those of only a one way variety, is the key to many people’s success in the search engines and there are very good reasons it is.

The backlinks to your site, for one, tell the search engines how popular your site is.  The more sites linking to you, the more popular you are.  It’s almost like the cliques in high school.

The next thing is that search engines look at when it comes to backlinks is what types of sites are linking to you.  If you’re pounding away links on sites that are of low quality, filled with spam and spammed with links you’ll still get credit for a link back to your site but that value of that link will be degraded.  So, these links not only tell search engines how popular your site or blog is but they also tell search engines about your quality.

Search engines will also gauge how relevant your site is based on how the links to your site are actually linking to you.  Are they linking to you of their own accord, without a reciprocal link?  Are they linking to you with a few other links, like a blogroll?  Or, are they linking to you within the context of the content on their page? 

If they’re linking to you without a reciprocal, it stands to reason your site is fairly relevant to the content on your page.  If they’re linking to you contextually, within the text on their page that isn’t filled with spam and without a reciprocal link – then in the eyes of the search engines it’s quite likely that the anchor text being used to link to your site is extremely relevant.

Remember, when you’re out on the search to get backlinks to your site, try to take into account how and where that link to your site is being placed and you’ll be doing your SEO a great service.

Building backlinks can be an arduous process. The most common free methods are directory submissions, article submissions, comment posting and social bookmarking.

However, articles take time to write, and writers’ block can be hard to shake off. Directory submissions are hard to get approved for new Page Rank Zero sites. Comment posting can be a good option. And social bookmarking doesn’t always increase traffic unless many users bookmark it.

Fortunately, there are some easier ways to get links, and I shall be listing them in a short series of articles.

For this first article, I shall describe using public information about your site to gain backlinks.

Domain information tools such as whois.net, Alexa and domaintools.com maintain information about virtually every domain. As a result, every domain will have a backlink from these sites. However, the search engines won’t know about all these pages unless they’re informed of them. Therefore, webmasters who’ve registered new domains can gain some free backlinks by merely pointing links at these pages. These links can be hosted on blogs, forums or any other sites that is already indexed.

As an example, I have recently registered the domain dawjee.com, and would like to add some backlinks to it. In order to get them from whois.net, Alexa and domaintools.com, I need to place the following links on indexed pages (e.g. my blog):

http://whois.domaintools.com/dawjee.com

http://www.alexa.com/data/details/?url=dawjee.com

In order to get the search engines to index pages for other domains, simply replace dawjee.com in the links above.

The great thing is, that the free targeted traffic is not just a dream but a reality also. Search engines see the number of incoming backlinks like votes, which related web sites give to your site by setting your link on their page.

The search engines evaluate your site according to the number of incoming backlinks. The more your site has them, the more useful it is and the more higher search engines will place your site on the search result pages. And the more targeted web site traffic you will receive.

Sounds too easy to be true. But suprise, suprise, it is easy. The process is called web site optimization., which means using ways to get higher search engine position. So the key is to know, how search engines put all sites in certain order.

The first thing to get targeted web site traffic is to make a so called on page optimization.The keywords play a leading role in that process. As you know people search information in the internet by typing keywords or – phrases on the search bar and will get a list of pages as a result, which all include the keyword searched.

This and only this, is the order of issues in the optimization process. It means that by using only huge number of incoming backlinks, you cannot reach your target. The direction is missing. Keywords will direct your site to the right search result pages.

Because free targeted web site traffic is so important, you may wonder how you can build the amount of incoming backlinks, which is needed. Maybe the best way is to write keyword articles and distribute them using some software, which will broadcast them into hundreds of directories and websites with the click of the mouse

These articles will do two things. They will form the required number of incoming backlinks and they will pre sell the idea of your page and then bring these warm visitors into your website.

You can find blogs on related topics. Stop by the blog and read the posts. If you have something to add to the conversation leave a comment.

When you leave a comment at a blog you can use the name field of the comment form for your keyword. Then fill in the rest of the information and your comment. This will give you an anchor text link back to your site. Make sure you look around and make sure the blog owner allows this. Some don’t and will consider it spamming. Most marketing blogs will allow you to do this, and many blog owners don’t care.

As you can see there are tons of ways you can create backlinks to your site. The trick is you have to do it. It can be much more fun to spend time creating content, and interacting in social networking communities for traffic, but if you want to get organic search traffic you are going to have to build backlinks. Three: Blogs and Forums. These are also great for building backlinks to your site. You have to be careful when using this method because of the fact that public participation is high in these two areas, which means that they are more prone to having people start link spamming.

The way to do this is with blogs and forums you need to participate only in constructive discussions and be careful about accepting backlinks if they point to poor content or lesser ranked sites.

These are all very good ways to build your sports backlinks. You just have to make sure that you get started and then keep getting more and more backlinks on a daily or weekly basis. The more effort you put into getting good quality backlinks the more traffic you will get to your site and the better page rank it will receive.
